An Historical Day in Officeland

Been working for the same state agency for over twenty years, and I have never, ever seen a mention made of June being Gay Pride Month. Today, I found a notice posted in our reception area that, well, see for your self. Unfortunately, the picture is not the best, I took it with my camera phone - but son of a gun, if Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is not noted, just after Caribbean American Heritage Month!

Darling Pax I've always said your Blog was a font of information, I always knew that Gay Pride was held sometime in June but I had no idea that June was designated as Pride Month. You learn something new every day.

I remember fondly my first Gay Pride Parade. I was a naive 20 something who had grown up in the suburbs in the 1960s and 70s where the one kid of Chinese heritage was my exposure to "different".
I was wandering around the Noth side of Chicago when first I passed a small group of people in leathers and studs. Following them led me into the middle of a parade running up Clark St. I am sure my mouth hung open as I watched the cars and floats go by.

That day the flamboyance stood out. I came to check the newspapers in June to make sure I did not miss the parade.

As my circle of friends and associates has grown, I appreciate the similarities as well as the differences of people I know who are gay as one of the many facets of who they are. I still love the parade.

Of course it's not mentioned the same way we aren't suppose to think of abortion as a LEGAL medical procedure. These are two things that portions of society STILL encourage us to feel shame about.

Well three cheers to the advanced and open minded state of New Jersey!
